Overview
The Principal Research and Development Engineer is a recognized technical subject matter expert with extensive knowledge of multiple disciplines. They support complex technical projects of strategic importance to the iMRI Division and Cook Medical. They are part of the research and development of novel medical devices and work within an interdisciplinary and cross-functional team supporting an innovative product pipeline.
Responsibilities
• Carries out and leads engineering projects concerned with new processes development and manufacturing
• Inspects performance of machinery, equipment and tools to verify their efficiency and investigates/initiates redesign and replacement
• Conducts research to develop new or modified processes, material, products, systems, methods, and/or equipment
• Creates and communicates quality system documentation such as process failure mode effects analysis, process flow charts, process validation plans, validation protocols, manufacturing procedures, etc.
• Responsible for testing and validation of design and theoretical concepts either directly or through delegation
• Oversees transfer and validation of methods and processes in production
• Evaluates root cause analysis and corrective action plans
• Ensures the development of engineering drawings and evaluates all technical work instructions
• Applies diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to projects
• Develops cost-effective solutions to highly technical complex manufacturing problems that require a high level of creativity
• Helps evaluate candidates for and incumbents in technical roles
• Designs, develops and transfers manufacturing engineering tools, strategies and systems
• Evaluates the work of outside service providers (facilities)
• Interacts and communicates with associated operating departments, vendors, and customers as necessary to produce cohesive efforts towards accomplishing Company goals. Reinforce an environment of teamwork and collaboration
• Provides work direction, coaching, and guidance to engineers, designers, technicians and associates as assigned
• Promotes employee development and fosters growth of employees through effective mentoring
Qualifications
• 15+ years as a degreed engineer (12+ with a masters degree in engineering), preferably mechanical or materials or both
• Previous leadership experience. Can lead through example and provide technical guidance to more junior engineers
• Must have experience in a structured regulatory environment with advanced quality systems such as ISO13485, ISO 9001, AS9100, TS16949 or equivalent
• Working knowledge of SolidWorks and AutoCAD software, 2D& 3D
• Familiarity with statistical problem solving and six sigma techniques to make data-based decisions
• Excellent analytical skills in determining root cause and evaluating potential solutions
• Proficient with formal validation processes, techniques and strategies
• Superior mechanical aptitude
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact and negotiate with all levels of the organization, customers and suppliers
• Proficient with MS Word, Excel and Power Point
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
• Light to moderate physical effort required
• Regularly required to sit or stand, reach and move about the facility
• Work performed in both a manufacturing and office environment
• Exposure to metals, lubricants, solvents, electrolytes and other hazardous materials
• Professional environment requiring business casual attire
• Safety glasses and safety shoes are required
• Other personal safety equipment required as listed in SDS depending on task may include safety goggles, ear protection, full - face shield, apron, arm guards, rubber boots and gloves
