Academic Advisor (Finance)
This position is in the Office of Student Services and the department of Academic Advising. Academic Advisors report to the Coordinator of Academic Advising. Office of Student Services encompasses the areas of Admissions/Outreach, Advising, Financial Aid, Career, Disability, Student Affairs, and Registration. Academic Advising comprises 7 positions of the 30 in the unit. This position primarily assists both prospective transfer and current students at USF Sarasota‐Manatee for the College of Business. However, due to the nature and needs of this campus, it is imperative that each academic advisor be cross‐trained on the prerequisites and basics of each of the majors offered. Collaboration with the academic advising team, admissions, and outreach along with univeristy personnel is extremely important. Effective communication skills with students, faculty, and staff are a high priority. A thorough knowledge of university services, admissions, academic, gpa, testing, and graduation requirements is imperative. Fully Remote
Responsibilities
Advise and counsel prospective, transfer and continuing USF Sarasota‐Manatee students. Duties include approve course permits, review college applications, declare majors, receive/process internship applications, review graduation applications, and certify graduation applicants at end of semester. Support and prescribe retention strategies for students with academic issues. Evaluate, equate, and verify every course in a student's previous academic transcript to determine applicability to the USF Sarasota‐Manatee degree in conjunction with faculty. Declare majors and update degree audit appropriately. Learn and participate in the Admissions processes. Coordinates policy and procedure interpretation as appropriate with other Student Services, Academic Affairs, and Administrative Services personnel in order to ensure uniformity of interpretation, implementation, and application of the policy. Collaborate with faculty, USF system colleagues, and recruiters in promoting academic programs. Liasion to both state/community college staff and students. Participate in the planning, implementation, and presentation of the new student orientation sessions ‐‐ Fall, Spring and Summer. Assist with Information Sessions for prospective students. Provide information and referrals regarding the availability of services at USF Sarasota‐Manatee and the USF System to assist with student success. Participate and support the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategies to improve student retention and student services. Interpret admission trends to assist the college course schedulers with recommendations in course scheduling/offerings, visits to state/community colleges to disseminate university information. Writing recommendation or Financial Aid appeal letters.
Qualifications
Master's degree; or a bachelor's degree with a minimum of one year of progressively responsible experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education. This position requires a Master's degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities; or a Bachelor's degree in those same fields with a minimum of one year of progressively responsible experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.
