Position Details:
The School of Art & Art History at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in Photography. Appointment to begin August 2025.
The successful candidate for this assistant professor position, in line with the performance expectations of an R1 AAU institution, will maintain an active record of high-impact creative research at the national or international level and will have ambitions to produce and exhibit original creative work that significantly contributes to the field. Their research agenda will align with the candidate's guidance for the future direction of photography within the School of Art & Art History, enhancing the program's reach through innovative and cross-disciplinary initiatives. Evidence of the candidate's progress toward these goals will help identify a strong applicant.
The School of Art and Art History is dedicated to exploring the full spectrum of photographic practices, from traditional techniques to cutting-edge experimental methods. The ideal candidate will contribute significantly to our ambitious curriculum and help shape the future of our undergraduate and graduate offerings.
Typically, the candidate will teach two undergraduate courses per semester and mentor graduate students. They must be adept at developing new curricula and teaching courses that cater to both undergraduate non-majors and art specialization majors. They will also participate on service committees and projects at various levels throughout the institution.
This position allows for regular proposals and sponsorship of artists for our prestigious Kennedy Visiting Artist program, which brings nationally and internationally recognized artists to our community for periods ranging from a few days to an entire term. These artists will lecture, mentor, critique, and engage our student artists in contemporary art discourse and community building.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical and theoretical foundation, with an expansive approach that embraces the evolving role of contemporary lens-based processes in a global context.

The College of Design, Art & Performance offers a wide array of classes ranging from arts electives available to the entire USF student population to highly specialized courses for majors in each of our disciplines, as well as a doctoral level program in music education. The Photography program at the University of South Florida fosters a broad range of experimentation and critical thinking around the expressive potentials of photography. The curriculum includes a diverse array of courses in both analog and digital photography, as well as special topics that explore alternative processes and cross-media collaborations like Photo Sculpture. Students also benefit from external experiences, including lectures from visiting artists and the opportunity to participate in the Paris Summer Art program. The nationally ranked Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree emphasizes in-depth projects and theoretical engagement, providing graduate students with excellent studio space, technical facilities, and teaching opportunities.
