Position Summary The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for assisting Physicians and/or Mid-level Providers in the clinic setting. Duties include: rooming patients, obtaining medical histories, completing thorough documentation in EMR, preparation of injections, front desk phone calls, assisting with procedures, including the application and removal of casts and the fitting and educational use of Durable Medical Equipment (DME). Assists in general maintenance of equipment, supplies, and exam rooms.
Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities MA utilizes medical skills to provide support to patients and health care staff under the supervision of a licensed provider or nurse. Prepares EMR for new patients. Ensures that proper patient forms are complete, current, and entered into the computer.
MA checks EMR for progress notes and stat orders, prepares charge tickets and acts on any stat orders. Runs charge tickets and patient specific forms. Updates health maintenance at patient visit, accurately identifies medication changes and updates allergy information at each visit. Initiates radiology order entry for physician to sign.
Monitors and communicates changes in patient condition to licensed provider or nurse. MA gathers information for outside testing if required. Obtains authorizations from insurance companies for testing and injections. Provides back-up coverage and assists in daily office routine when needed in other areas.
MA Monitors patient waiting area. Monitors and maintains office equipment; Orders office supplies, orthopaedic/medical equipment, and supplies. Cleans, sterilizes, and stocks/maintains examination rooms and equipment.
Maintains cleanliness of all clinical areas and exam rooms; restocks and orders supplies within budgetary constraints; checks and cleans equipment, makes minor adjustments, reports need for repair or maintenance to manager.
MA assists physicians and/or physician's assistant with special procedures, gathers necessary equipment of instruments, positions patient and responds to instructions given by physician or mid-level provider.
Prepares laboratory requisitions, arranges for transport of specimens to laboratory as appropriate. Removal of sutures, staples, dressing and wraps; application and removal of casts and splints.
Application and patient education on DME. Preparation and drawing up of injections. Gathers necessary data and instructional materials for discharged patients, ensures that patient is aware of any necessary follow-up appointment times and locations.
Provides patient education on physician's plan of care (hand-outs/return demonstration etc.). Ensures charge tickets are marked appropriately for injection and/or equipment and supplies are given to patient. MA attends in-services and departmental meetings.

Position Requirements
Education: Graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant Program.
Experience: One (1) to two (2) years of demonstrated experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.
Technical Skills: N/A
Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: Current Certification as a Medical Assistant required within six (6) months of hire. Preferred Associations and Certifications are: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) - CMA, American Medical Technologists (AMT) - RMA, and National Healthcareer Association (NHA) - CCMA. BLS required within three (3) months of hire.
